Liposuction of the Neck
Fat in the neck can add years to an otherwise youthful face. Liposuction may make a world of difference.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction of the neck?
Patients with fat below the chin and in the neck without too much skin laxity. Typically, increased exercise and improved diet does not seem to help. These are the ideal patients for this procedure.
Who is not a good candidate for liposuction alone?
Patients who have increased laxity of the neck are not good candidates for liposuction because it does not address the excess skin. These patients are great candidates for a face and neck lift, which combines liposuction with tightening of the skin and muscle bands.
How is the surgery performed?
The incisions required are tiny (less than one centimeter) and placed in areas where they are not noticeable. One incision is underneath the chin and the other two are hidden in the natural crease where the earlobes attach to the face. Through these incisions, suction instruments are used to remove the fat.
What can I expect after surgery?
This is an outpatient procedure. After the procedure, the patient wears a compressive dressing overnight. The next day the dressing is removed in the office and a supporting sling under the neck must then be worn at all times for two weeks, and then just at night for two additional weeks. Imagine that gravity is constantly pulling down on the neck skin. If it is not supported during its weakened state after surgery, then it will have more trouble tightening up into the new, sharp neck line. The sutures are removed within the first week. It is important to maintain a stable weight during the healing process to prevent new fat accumulation in the neck.
